Cameroon Political Opposition Figure to Face Court Action Regarding Electoral Turmoil, Government Declares

Election Protest in Cameroon
Many in Cameroon are furious over the fact that Paul Biya has secured an eighth consecutive term

Cameroon's Minister of the Interior the interior minister has declared that political opponent Tchiroma Bakary will face legal action over claims that he instigated "aggressive electoral rallies".

No fewer than 4 protesters have been lost their lives during confrontations between police and military and protesters since the presidential election on October 12, with the 92-year-old head of state securing an eighth term in office.

The opposition leader maintains that he won the election, a assertion rejected by Biya's ruling party, the CPDM.

Violent crackdowns by law enforcement on demonstrators have alarmed the global community, with the UN, African Union and European Union demanding moderation.

Minister's Allegations

Recently, the interior minister charged the opposition figure of coordinating what he described as "unauthorized" rallies leading to the deaths, and also rebuked him for declaring victory in the electoral contest.

He noted that the opposition leader's "co-conspirators behind an insurrectionary plan" will also undergo judicial processes.

Poll Figures

Cameroon's leader, who came to power in 1982 and is now the most elderly national leader, secured the 12 October presidential election with 53.7% of the ballots, compared to 35.2% for the challenger, according to the constitutional court.

Opposition Response

Tchiroma Bakary is remains silent to the government's decision to try him, but he had before stated that he rejected a stolen vote - and that he was not afraid of being arrested.

On election result day, he said that armed men opened fire on demonstrators gathered near his house in Garoua, causing the death of at least 2 civilians.

Inquiry Revealed

Earlier this week, the interior minister disclosed that an inquiry would be initiated into violent incidents surrounding the declaration of the election results.

"Throughout the violence, some of the individuals involved lost their lives," he stated, without providing a specific number of demonstrators who have been fatally injured in the confrontations.

The minister further mentioned that a number of officers of the police and military also suffered serious injuries.

Present Conditions

Although the interior minister insisted the situation across the country was now stable, demonstrators are still demonstrating in certain regions of the nation, especially in Douala and Garoua, where protesters set up barricades on that day, and ignited rubber on the thoroughfares.

Experts alert that the post-electoral violence could push the nation into a leadership vacuum.
