Research Discovers Polar Bear DNA Modifications May Assist Adaptation to Climate Warming

Researchers analyzed tissue samples taken from polar bears in different areas of Greenland and contrasted “mobile genetic elements”: small, mobile sections of the genetic code that can alter how various genes operate. Conditions in the northern area are less variable and more stable, while in the south-east there is a significantly hotter and more open water habitat, with steep weather swings.

Scientists observed some intriguing DNA alterations, such as in areas linked to lipid metabolism, that may assist Arctic bears cope when resources are limited. Godden stated: “We identified several genetic hotspots where these jumping genes were particularly busy, with some found in the critical areas of the genome, indicating that the bears are experiencing rapid, profound DNA modifications as they adapt to their melting sea ice habitat.”

Future Research and Conservation Implications

The following stage will be to look at other polar bear populations, of which there are numerous around the world, to observe if comparable changes are happening to their DNA.

This study might aid safeguard the bears from disappearance. However, the experts stressed that it was vital to stop global warming from increasing by cutting the use of fossil fuels.

“We cannot be complacent, this offers some optimism but is not a sign that Arctic bears are at any reduced threat of disappearance. We still need to be doing everything we can to reduce pollution and decelerate global warming,” concluded Godden.
