🔗 Share this article To the Store Clerk That Left Me Completely Wordless – My Hat's Off to You The scene was a day of rest, and I felt in a foul mood, filling up my mum’s car. The location was a common fuel stop that doubles as a convenience store, so you run the risk of ending up in line customers carrying goods of pricey provisions. This is a dreadful thing to occur when your only desire is to get gasoline and leave. Terrible. Fourth in line I stood among those waiting. There was only cashier operating, a young woman. Something stood out about her. After the ditherer at the head of the line had finally paid for his Viakal, a baked snack, and some breakfast items, I was certain overhearing the cashier bid him an excellent day. Unusual. Could be I misunderstood, or possibly she uttered it and meant it ironically. I pondered if she could even be an ally in my battle with dithering, sharing my contempt for individuals slowing down straightforward customers like me. Advancing next, now third in line. The next shopper of our line completed her gasoline purchase with impressive quickness. And there it was again: “I hope you have a fantastic day.” In fact, it was “enjoy a truly great day”. Someone from the US? Here in Stourbridge? Her tone suggested it, and few locals wishes anyone such a cheerful phrase, or even just a nice day. Highly unusual. It's uncommon to find US citizens frequenting this area, least of all holding jobs in fueling spots or other places. I was second now. After an elderly lady embroiled in a right old battle with her carryall, her food items, her purse and her membership pass. It went on for ever. When she was done, she as well received the wish a wonderful day. Yes, American for sure. Confirming it was possible by making a witty remark to her, to see if she did that thing their typical stare, without a smile, and say with absolute sincerity: “That is quite humorous.” But I couldn’t think of a funny comment to utter. Ultimately, I accepted the genuine warmth – or an impersonation of it, that equates to the same thing – while she stared directly into my eyes, to my very core, and bid me to have a great day. I felt better for it. Beneficial indeed.
