UN:Me: An Psychological Thriller That Blends Survival Horror and Among Us Mechanics

The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of fascinating upcoming titles, but one in particular has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.

"It's a unique experience where a young woman containing multiple personalities within her must escape from a maze of the psyche," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Shattered Consciousness

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of high school age. Inside her reside four separate personas, each with their own anxieties and drives. These entities can take over spontaneously, releasing their innermost phobias upon her without warning.

Judging by revealed footage, much of the action unfolds within a eerie medical facility, while other scenes depict the protagonist exploring a desolate chapel.

A World of Individual Dread

"What are you fearful of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. People in power. Elements that appear minor to others can activate something primal inside us. This game explores that idea — fears that are specific to each person."

The core gameplay loop revolves around managing the persona that emerges at a particular time. However, these souls will switch against your will during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become amplified and assault the protagonist in succession. When the soul shifts, so does the specific fear the player experiences.

Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Decision

At first glance, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is filled with orderlies all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide grins. Patients in the waiting room have large flowers growing from their necks are. Flowers are an ever-present theme, contrasting organic elegance with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique twist. Players must determine which of the four souls inhabiting the protagonist is the "true" one. "Each of the souls claims that the body belongs to them," notes a developer. "During the game, you must determine who is authentic."

Once players believes a persona is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, since every entity can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.

"Perhaps you've already eliminated the true [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The final entity remaining might be a fake. In any case, your decisions are final."

UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
